America is known to be the home of soldiers. Not just the kind that go abroad to fight in wars overseas; I'm talking about the ones who soldier through life while living in the wealthiest nation in the world. But similar to the way pressure can create diamonds, Savi6 is proof that the struggle can bring out the fighter in a man.

The ‘Nova Baby’ EP by California hip-hop artist, Savi6, is for those of us in the proverbial trenches.

Tigger warning this song talks about d*ath. The first song on the EP, ‘Dark cloudz’, is a beautifully dark introduction to the mindset of a soldier who has been through a lot. It starts with a sultry melodic guitar, followed by the powerful bass kicking in like the stomps of army boots marching into war. What drew me in as a listener was Savi6's use of the chorus to describe his dark state of mind and the verses as means to deliver his backstory. Every time the chorus circled back, I understood him better and better as both an artist and a man.
In ‘4 Myself’, Savi6 digs deeper to share his ‘why’ for following his passions and relying on himself to succeed. Though titled ‘4 Myself’ - out the gate he raps about family. As a listener you can almost hear this mans stomach rumbling, he… is…. hungry. He wants to succeed and he is doing everything he can to provide for his family and self-actualize as an artist.
‘Rock Bottom’ rings in like a “victory anthem”; that ‘turn the music up!’ for the ones who “made it up!” music. The song represents that feeling of hope being restored because you know what you just went through. With each verse, Savi6 shares his story with a smooth autotune effect, harmonizing certain parts to emphasize his lyrics. How ironic that the song is called ‘Rock Bottom’ when its about being being up!

The fourth song on the EP, ‘Dawg 4 Life’, is arguably the single of the project, as it serves as an ode to the homies over a beat that sounds similar to a Bay Area production with a LA twist; its definitely compelling to say the least! Lyrically, Savi6 dropped gems and jewels over several bars which hit deep if you've listened intently to the EP. Through the lens and lessons of Savi6, he uses his music to deliver game as to why tight bonds prevail over loose friendships.
‘Nothin 2 Somthin’ was a strong closer for the ‘Nova Baby’ EP. It arguably had the best feature on the EP with the second artist who gave us a Future like contrast in style and effect. But Savi6 jumped on the verse more commandingly; his lyrics honest and direct. I think what is most remarkable about Savi6's story is that it is both uniquely his own and yet still relatable to many who find it hard to make friends with everyone while staying focused on the mission.
Though ‘Nova Baby’ was released in 2022, its relatability may make it a timeless classic for anyone in the proverbial trenches.
With 40 monthly listeners a month, Savi6 is definitely slept on and is one of the best artists under 1,000 monthly listeners. Be sure to check out other dope music in his vault like ‘True Religion Pockets’ and let me know what you think of his album in the comments below!
